This sight was to become very familiar to the English bowlers during that summer"

But how did this auction come about? It is a long read but stay with me ...

My name is Tim and our son Connor was born in 2002 with a severe heart condition requiring life saving open heart surgery at 5 days of age in Melbourne, Australia to reconstruct his Aortic Arch and Aortic & Mitral valves. At three months of age Connor unexpectantly went into uncontrolled heart failure leaving him in critical condition. Our loyal cardiologist was called to the hospital on that Sunday night and told us that Connor may not survive. He was stabilised and again we travelled to Melbourne (our son by air ambulance) where fortunately his condition improved and further open heart surgery was averted until 2004 when his Mitral valve was again reconstructed.

We now play the waiting game. Connor almost definitely requires further open heart surgery at some stage in the future with an artificial Mitral valve a likely outcome. In fact during this very auction he will undergo a cardiac catheter procedure to retrieve vital data for his surgeon in Melbourne to plan the future.

But Connor is just one of over 100 South Australian children that travel to Melbourne each year for heart surgery.

Being passionate about ours and others situation, I commenced "The Special Zipper" uptrade challenge in July 2006 in the footsteps of Kyle MacDonald of "One Red Paperclip" fame. You know that minor trading accomplishment from a red paperclip to a house in just 12 months.

I commenced trading with a "clothes zipper" costing $2 from Woolworths. Well actually it was about one of five in a pack so let's say it was probably more like 40 cents. The zipper represents the scar that remains on many of our children's chests. Unfortunately they often act as a zipper with many children requiring multiple open heart surgeries.

Very quickly the California Heart Connection in the United States opened trading with a "Heart Hugs Teddy Bear" .. one that was sooooo cute I couldn't let Connor see it or the next trade would not occur. The "fine zipper" later to be known as "the special zipper" crossed international borders with Ted entering Australia.

Ted the Hearthugs teddy bear was then traded with Alison Byrne of Heartkids Australia at that time who traded a Stussy supplied cap signed by Tim Campbell of Home and Away.

In the third uptrade, the cap was traded for a gold bracelet with close friends in Canberra whose niece is also a cardiac or heart kid who proceeded Connor with her condition and in fact has an artificial valve.

The fourth uptrade saw the gold bracelet traded for a $250 gift voucher from Karran's of Hyde Park.

The fifth trade has the voucher traded for a magnificent limited edition print containing 8 separate motion photographs of Australian legendary cricketer Dennis Lillee. Dennis signed the print especially for the challenge and also initialed that it is from his private collection. This was a sensational piece of memorabilia and sporting history.

Then the ante was increased when the sixth trade saw a Sir Don Bradman AC Commemorative Release provided which is on auction today.

Whilst unfortunately it would appear I will not reach my target of $10,000 for the challenge, my wife and I have been able to raise approximately $2000 along the way through auctioning items provided by the Wiggles, the Adelaide Football Club and other basic fundraising.

Thanks to the Adelaide Sunday Mail who provided media coverage in October 2006. You can read the article here.

The time has well and truly come to finalise the challenge so go for it and make an offer.

Be part of what according to Kyle MacDonald's own knowledge is the only uptrade challenge in Australia with full funds to charity (apart from a couple of radio stations).
